So There Might Be Another Batman… It’s Kinda Confusing…

moar batman So There Might Be Another Batman... Its Kinda Confusing...

I won’t pretend to be thrilled about the news that has been making its way around the internet today. I’m not even sure I understand it. Let me break it down to the best of my ability. Jeff Robinov (President of Warner Bros.) recently gave an interview to Hero Complex about WB’s long-term strategy for their DC Comics properties. The interview included Mr. Robinov saying that a Justice League movie is in the works… as is another Batman movie after The Dark Knight Rises… sorta. The article mentions that Batman will be an important property that will continue after Christopher Nolan finishes his bit with it next year. But then Mr. Robinov states that Chris and Emma will stay on as producers. Yea… I don’t know what’s going on either.

Robinov knows that the most bankable part of his superhero empire has been Nolan and his Gotham City films –  the studio has yet to deliver a 21st century superhero blockbuster hit without Nolan in the director’s seat. Batman will continue to be a centerpiece property beyond next year’s The Dark Knight Rises and Nolan’s departure from the franchise. “We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman…Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”
- Hero Complex

It sounds to me like Warner Bros. has a gun to Nolan’s head, forcing him to help out their otherwise rocky superhero franchises. A reinvention of Batman sounds fairly straight forward to me; a reboot… of sorts. It’s unlikely that the movie will have any direct connections to Nolan’s three installments, but I suppose anything is possible. Whatever it ends up being, referring to it as Batman 4 seems ludicrous. Perhaps Chris and Emma will advise the re-imagining. Perhaps Robinov wants Chris to convince Christian Bale to stay on. My hope is that whatever is done with any future Batman films is done by not trying to mimic Christopher Nolan’s work. Sorry for all of the ellipses.

This is simple. They will have Nolan and his wife only because of their name. I don’t think that Nolan wants to work on any kind of Batman-thing after TDKR, he will only put his name on these films because… well, because he’s Christopher Nolan:-D No need to worry. After reading the article myself, I wasn’t surprised at all. We all know there will be other Batman-movies, we all know Chris won’t do a fourth one, so there’s really no need to “worry” (of course it wouldn’t be bad if he’d done a fourth one, but you know what I mean when I say “worry” in this case:-D).

this is not a good idea…

“It sounds to me like Warner Bros. has a gun to Nolan’s head, forcing him to help out their otherwise rocky superhero franchises.”

I disagree with that. I don’t think anyone is forcing him to do anything, and he certainly isn’t taking the producer job for the money. If he wasn’t interested in producing the next Batman movie, he’d kindly decline the offer.

I don’t see how this is such a bad thing. As a Batman fan, I’m pumped! With Nolan’s name attached, I feel comfortable that I won’t see another “Batman & Robin”.

    Not Cool.

Of course he doesn’t /have/ to do anything. It seems like his options are to sit idle while WB goes and tries to make another Batman quickly after he leaves and see what mess they cook up, or jump in and keep the loonies from taking over the asylum without becoming the warden.

Let’s say Nolan finishes the 3rd film in a great way with a ‘be all to end all’ ending, which wouldn’t warrant any other Batman films following ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (especially if Bruce Wayne/Batman is dead, or his identity is revealed or something…), and like ‘The Dark Knight’ before it, it becomes a classic… why would Warner Bros. try to screw that up? It’d be like rebooting ‘The Lord of the Rings’ in 2005 or ‘The Godfather’ in 1992! *sigh* But then again, they’re rebooting Spider-Man less than 4/5 years because ‘Spider-Man 3′ was mediocre, although ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ was mediocre as well and ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ was bullshit, and they’re continuing those franchises. Anything’s possible when a studio doesn’t have that many marketable properties outside of Harry Potter, Superman, and Batman…

Other than that, I think people (okay, the Studios) are starting to go a little nuts for any film that’s Comic Book/Superhero-based, but that may be just me.

  • Silverbullet89

Well, since Nolan’s movies are more directed at the beginning story of batman… maybe, just MAYBE this “new” batman movie will be much, much further in the future, seeing as how they want to tie it in to a Justice League movie. I’m hoping that’s the case.

    Nice one WB. -__-

  • Sinception

    what’s confusing?

  • Jim_hawkins2

I believe the only way Nolan produces a reboot is if WB continually throws out huge amounts of budgets for various films like Inception/TDK and TDKR. Nolan has more original works up his sleeve as well as other projects that he can make legendary like he did with his brothers short story “Memento” etc.

Who are we kidding? It was rather obvious Batman would be totally re-invented after Nolan’s work (either because his trilogy’s conclusion will preclude any way to go on with the story, or because he simply doesn’t want it to be altered with a new one), and I’m not so negative about it.
I’m extremely hyped about TDKR but we’re still far from hearing more details on it and, most importantly, actually seeing it.
But once Nolan is done, there are so many radically different versions of Batman that could be brought to screen.. Hell, I’d love to bring mine to the screen and it’s quite different from Nolan’s!! (though I’ll always bow down to the greatness of his movies and how well he captured both the essence and look of the Batman universe)

Nolan already reinvented the Batman franchise, there’s no need for another reboot or whatever… especially not so soon after TDKR.

  • Gregb

Good for Nolan. Just because we don’t want Nolan associated with what (we presume) will be crappy movies isn’t a good enough reason for the guy not to hitch himself to the two biggest comic franchises in history. Anyone in their right-mind would do the same for their own financial interests. We all know he will be judged solely on his directorial achievements, not what he has his name tagged to for “creative influence,” e.g. Superman (which I am already dubious about considering Snyder’s selection). And there’s no “gun to his head;” if Nolan were to ditch WB he would have more than a few companies drooling over the possibility of producing a film. He signed onto this for the money and I can’t fault him.

WB is going to need money. The last Harry Potter movie is this summer and the last (planned) Batman movie is next summer. Each HP movie has earned WB about $1B and so did TDK. DKR will likely make even more given the ever-increasing number of IMAX theaters around the world.

WB is running out of these guaranteed $1B blockbusters.

    r u fucking with me ? WTF ? WTF is this shit, WB , r u fucking high ?!

This trilogy is the vision of NOLAN about BATMAN. This is it. If they do another reboot, then NOLAN shouldn`t be involved at all.

    I vote Nolan produce/write a Batman Beyond movie :)

  • Ethermay

i just threw up in my mouth a little…

WB dont care about tarnishing nolans batman trilogy once hes done, there not jus goin to leave the franchise alone and move on. They believe that they can still make billions of dollars from the franchise after nolan leaves….dont matter if nolan directs them or not… sadly its all about the money not the quality of the movies…because we all know that NOONE will ever top nolans batman films..ever

  • crazy_emerald_blue

Why can’t that just, I don’t know, make JGL Jean Paul Valley like a few people mentioned and then have the supposed new B-man movie be about Valley stepping in when Bruce gets his butt kicked by Tom- I mean Bane. I wouldn’t mind some dark and twisty Azrael love. Just sayin…

  • Digiwin

Nolan is in Pittsburgh today doing scouting for something… My wife talked with his children’s nanny downtown.

  • Brickarts295

im getting a real dejavu felling here so instead of batman 4 we get a reboot isnt this what is happening with spider man i mean i get it now WB is going to lose Harry potter and now batman so how do they make more money REBOOTS ! i wouldn’t be surprise to see a harry potter reboot in the next few years

  • Aaron H

A reboot? No no no no. That would be absolutely retarded. What I could see happening though is a Nolan produced BATMAN BEYOND!

  • Pmitchpictures

I’m all for a Batman Beyond film series… Best way to get a crowd pleaser if they just want more profit from the Batman franchise. Its would actually be groundbreaking cinematically..

  • http://www.videoconverterfactory.com/tips/ IceRain

    i like the batman series
    everything is cool

  • Ian Dyas

    Reboot? Again?

It would be better if Mr. Nolan continue the Batman’s chronicles after The Dark Knight Rises.

  • anonymous

we should start a petition to not reboot the series and to possibly have nolan as director again. I personally enjoyed batman begins and the dark knight but i didnt like how it was so realistic that he could only use some of the villians in the movies, He should have added some fantasy in it. But anyways we need to start a no reboot petition! does anyone agree?

  • Joe

I find it rather funny that one, ONE, person knows whats probably going to happen with this “new batman” movie.  And i agree it will probably be some sort of introduction of Batman Beyond. this i would love to see personally. although it would be hard to accomplish, but hey star wars got the hovercrafts and stuff like in the Batman Beyond comics so it is not impossible. A Batman Beyond series would not surprise me after Chris Nolan’s last installment with Christian Bale.

  • Sdcrater

I believe that they are going to follow joseph gordon levitt as he picks up batmans job as Robin.

  • GEORGE

I think there will be another batman but with robin has nightwing .
In Nightwing: Alfred’s Return #1 (1995), Grayson travels to England to find Alfred, who resigns from Bruce Wayne’s service following the events of KnightSaga. GEORGE
