that’s fantastic. obviously barbenheimer gave it an explosive opening but since that meme has already died down, i’m inclined to believe that at this point the movie is a drawing audience by its own appeal and word-of-mouth alone.

Awesome numbers.

UPDATE, SATURDAY August 19: Oppenheimer is on its way to yet another milestone, poised to cross $700M global through Saturday. After five frames, the epic is expected to reach $718M with Sunday's numbers included. That will make it Nolan’s 4th highest-grossing film ever worldwide, overtaking Interstellar. It will also move into the No. 4 spot on the global chart for 2023 so far.

Do we have any idea of how this film will perform in China? Are there estimates out yet?

Don't count on the film breaking out in China. Anyone who really wants to see Oppenheimer there has already seen it through 'other' means. I know that it's not Universal's fault as this was probably the earliest date that they could secure, but still, doesn't change the fact that the momentum is gone.

A staggered release CAN work, but only when the film is low-key, and no has no pre-release awareness. That allows word-of-mouth to spread, with people who had never heard of the movie now going to see it. See: Green Book's immense success in China despite its late release there.

It doesn't work when it's a highly anticipated blockbuster with immense pre-release awareness. Excited fans who would have seen this multiple times (had this been released in July with the rest of the world) have already seen it through 'other' means a month ago, and they've moved on.
