I imagine (and hope) War will be as well.okungnyo wrote:Dawn was pretty successful, though, at $710 million.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying, that Dawn was successful because it had fantastic timing and had basically no competition: https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/july/2014
But it's a difference case this time around, as it has a direct competitor targeting the same demographic coming out within a week of it.
It will still be successful, of course, but not as successful as it could have been, had this month been similarly barren as in 2014.

Exchange rates are also horrible now in overseas markets. It will have to perform about 30% better in local currencies overseas to reach the same amount in American dollars. Dunkirk is in a similar crappy spot compared to Interstellar.okungnyo wrote:Yeah, that's what I'm saying, that Dawn was successful because it had fantastic timing and had basically no competition: https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/july/2014

Next weekend will be interesting as not only will War of the Apes be in its second weekend along with Spider-Man in its third, but two more films vying for mostly the same demographic will be hitting theaters. First among them is the release of Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk into over 3,600 theaters followed by STX's release of Luc Besson's big budget sci-fi feature Valerian into over 3,400 theaters. Cornering it's own little segment of the marketplace, Universal will look to make a splash with the release of the R-rated comedy Girls Trip into ~2,500 locations.
