They're completely equal to me, while Roger Deakins and John Toll are just sublime. Admittedly, Toll hasn't done all that much that I like, but The Thin Red Line is by far the most well shot film I've ever seen. I really don't know why SPR won over TTRL with cinematography. Of course, Deakins' track record is unbeatable and his lighting is just sublime in the Assassination of Jesse James.

Deakins' work on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is amazing.
