Today, it has been revealed that the actor is actually up for a lead role in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.
Charlie Hunnam has already been cast in this sci-fi thriller, which finds giant monsters from space bombarding earth. To save mankind from extinction, a group of soldiers must battle this invading threat by manning large robots.
It isn't known which character Idris Elba will be playing in Pacific Rim. The actor is currently filming Ridley Scott's Alien spin-off Prometheus.
Thor star Idris Elba will play the lead role of Sensi in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, reports Deadline. He'll be joining Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day in the sci-fi actioner, scheduled to start production in November.
Pacific Rim is a science fiction story by Travis Beacham which sees a future Earth defending itself from attacking creatures.
The Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures project is targeted for a summer 2013 release.

The supporting cast also includes notable stars like Rinko Kikuchi, Willem Dafoe, and Robert Kazinsky, among others.
