Cinematographer John Toll, who won two back-to-back Oscars for his work for Edward Zwick's Legends of the Fall in 1994 and Mel Gibson's Braveheart in 1995, is in negotiations to shoot the new Matrix movie, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Lana Wachowski, who co-created the trilogy with Lilly Wachowski, is returning to the director's chair for the endeavor, and Toll's deal, when closed, will reunite him with the filmmaker, for whom he shot features Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending, and the Wachowskis' Netflix series, Sense8.
Toll's next film is Harriet, directed by Kasi Lemmons and staring Cynthia Erivo, which is slated to open Nov 1.
Most of his work is absolutely gorgeous
With the DoP signing on rather soon, production really could start in January 2020? A summer 2021 seems doable then
Thin Red Line, Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending all looked incredible.
The Last Samurai and Gone Baby Gone, too. I'm just not overly fond of some of his digital shot work.. Like Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and Iron Man Three.
Jupiter Ascending was indeed pretty, but just such a weird film lol

Yeah the film was... interesting lol. I didn’t hate it tho.
Can’t remember what IM3 looked like and haven’t seen the other film but judging by the trailer it didn’t look cinematic to me.
Just checked and he also worked on Sense8 and now I’m beyond excited.

I still have to see Sense8
But I'm like, already watching some five or six shows at once lol
Iron Man 3 was incredibly bright in theatre but then they dimmed the whole thing down for home release. No idea who's idea that was. Still though, I definitely wouldn't count it amongst his best shot work, at all.

Maybe the UHD release will fix that problem.
You MUST see sense8. One of my favorite shows.
