The first draft of ESB was written by a woman.
Supposedly it was terrible but that’s not terribly important.

obviously that argument is veiled sexism but i'm surprised (in principle) at how many people still go along with it. have never gotten a clear picture of what they think "takling big budget films" entails relative to an indie film. the stuggles of having more resources to shoot fewer pages per day...

I do think there's some sexism involved, but I don't think this totally tracks. There are many filmmakers who made an indie then jumped right into big budget filmmaking and clearly didn't have the knowledge or expertise to handle big action sequences, blockbuster film structure, the shooting schedule, visual effects, things like that.
The death of the mid-budget film has created this issue where young filmmakers make or break it on a single movie. It's why the MCU takes indie filmmakers then does all the "blockbuster" stuff with in-house teams, so that doesn't happen.
That said, this goes primarily for directors, not writers. They could've had a woman write or co-write any of the movies.

the more elements that are added to a film the more people there are to deal with them, and no matter the film the director isn't in charge of logistics. i certainly agree some companies are better at managing productions than others but i don't think directors are at the core of that conversation let alone their genders
There was a time when I was truly excited for a new Star Wars film.

My perfect Star Wars movie would be a horror film and focus on a bunch of Stormtroopers and rebels getting picked off one by one by Anzati on a stranded spaceship.
But Disney would never make that film so guess I'm stuck with whatever mediocre self-referential stuff they're willing to throw at us.
