sorry
Sorry, but more on this because I'm so peeved about it.
I LOVE both
Birdman and
The Revenant which is why I'm so mad I wasted two and a half hours on this boring, pseudo-intellectual, piece of depression porn. It's got this cool concept of the interweaving narratives featuring a stellar cast of people who sometimes never even meet (in the film or otherwise) each other. The acting is good across the board, the editing is really good, and I always appreciate well done handheld camera work. But, none of the stories ever go anywhere. You've essentially got two and a half hours of these characters going through horrible situations, and (in my opinion) a totally unnecessary story of a suicidal, sex addicted, deaf-mute girl who has almost no relation to the rest of the overarching story with Brad Pitt's character - and the worst part is, there's absolutely no payoff. It never goes anywhere - I felt completely robbed by this pretentious piece of shit.
In
Birdman and
The Revenant, we have characters that suffer, and we see them actually grow. Michael Keaton goes from a depressed, suicidal, washed up actor, to a man, who at the end, literally (or figuratively) flies away, into the sky. DiCaprio achieves his goal. We see him go on this journey of horrific suffering, to finally getting what he needed for self-fulfillment. He learns that "revenge is in God's hands."
Babel has none of that. It's a well made turd that thinks it's some high art but is realistically just a pretentious snoozefest.
