i've only seen these two, but they're both terrific. from what i've seen, he seems like a seriously underrated filmmaker - Rebel is certainly not remembered for the filmmaking, that's for sure (even if the filmmaking is mostly sublime)
and hey, Heat is great - 5 watches is a lot in that time for a 3 hour movie, though
It looks like Ray is underrated because he is not as well known to the general public as his contemporaries, but he has serious critical clout, and the French guys (at Cahiers du Cinéma) adored him. But yes, In A Lonely Place is great, and for me contains Bogart's best performance. My favorite Ray though is Johnny Guitar, which contains some truly memorable images. The Lusty Men is also something I'd recommend.
i'm spoiling my eventual festival round up post but 63 Up is my best of the fests/year. i've been a fan of the up series for some time so this sort of transcends being a film to basically a life event but i cried figuratively the whole time and literally 75% of the time. it tangibly helps you make sense of life
Johnny Guitar is easily my favorite Ray for now and I really love Rebel and Lonely Place. I'm curious about Bitter Victory as that's Godard's favorite Ray I think.
Casino (1995)
The only fault of this movie is it exists in a post Goodfellas world. Calling it a replica would be an understatement. But what a movie, Scorsese is a wizard.

yes, of course. i was speaking mostly about in the public, even current cinephile, sphere
since both you and spade have recommended Johnny Guitar, i'll have to see if i can make that a priority, here
