http://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/2016/0 ... ovocative/It’s hard to adequately describe the immensity of the ambition of Denis Villeneuve‘s “Arrival,” a film that dances with concepts so colossal they’ve rather obliterated most of the previous films that have attempted to grapple with them (Robert Zemeckis‘ “Contact” and Christopher Nolan‘s “Interstellar” come to mind). But “Arrival,” the shimmering apex of Villeneuve’s run of form that started back in 2010 with “Incendies,” calmly, unfussily and with superb craft, thinks its way out of the black hole that tends to open up when ideas like time travel, alien contact and the next phase of human evolution are bandied about.

It’s ingrained so deeply in Western culture that science and art are oppositional disciplines, that math and physics belong to one branch of endeavor and creativity, expressiveness and philosophy to another. And that is why great science fiction cinema — and this is great science fiction cinema — can feel like such a pre-eminent genre. Here, using an art form that was itself born of technology, we get to venture out past those simplistic binaries to where there is poetry in mathematics and physics in philosophy — out into the frontiers of our universe and our power to comprehend where science and art are the very same thing. “Arrival” brings us there, and though the conclusions are earthbound and have so much to do with the nature of humanity and our relationship to mortality, my God, they’re full of stars. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review ... iew-924941A fairly chilly, cerebral bit of business, from its beautifully tamped-down cinematography (by modern master Bradford Young) to Johann Johannson's ethereal score.
Anchored by an internalized performance from Amy Adams rich in emotional depth, this is a grownup sci-fi drama that sustains fear and tension while striking affecting chords on love and loss.
Prepare for the Nolan jabs. Why can't we have both dammit.

Inception and Interstellar are the best sci-fies of this century, and no Arrival can beat it.
JASON @MichaelNotCera
(1) ARRIVAL: An unshakable heart meets mind, multifaceted sci-fi masterwork fluctuating in thrill, serenity, contemplativeness and imagination.
(2) ARRIVAL centers wholly on Amy Adams' shoulders. A knockout performance showcasing her smarts, capability and sorrow.
(3) ARRIVAL is sort of what we all expected and originally wanted from Interstellar, but Villeneuve actually delivers on his promised potential

Arrival (Villeneuve): Words fail me. Timely, riveting, dizzying sci-fi parable on the intermeshing of language and life. #Venezia73
Peter Bradshaw @PeterBradshaw1
Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi contact drama Arrival is dreamy, freaky, audacious, with a big Shyamalan-ish reveal. Very entertaining #Venezia73
Rich Cline @shadowsrich
Villeneuve's #Arrival is almost literally mind-bending in what it suggests about humanity. Unmissable. #Venezia73
un Ospite di Venezia @aGuestinVenice
#Arrival is more than a sci-fi: it's a movie about communication and the power of words. So moving #Venezia73
Tommaso Tocci @Cinelais
ARRIVAL is fantastic well beyond its Nolan-esque concept. Hyper-elegant design, typically excellent tone/tension from Villeneuve. #Venezia73
Nicholas Barber @NicholasLBarber
The arrival of another Oscar contender at #Venezia73: Villeneuve's sci-fi parable Arrival blows the mind & wrings the heart.
Crème Brûlée @kambolecampbell
ARRIVAL: Surprisingly trippy tale of unity and peace (the anti-Sicario?). Great use of non-linear narrative. #Venezia73
ARRIVAL (2): Amazing cinematography and score. Tense, wondrous science-fiction that avoids fear of the 'Other' #Venezia73
ARRIVAL (3): Painstakingly detailed slow burner with occasionally mind blowing visual effects - simple, but very effective. Cool aliens.
ARRIVAL (4): Makes me very excited for Villeneuve's Blade Runner sequel. #Venezia73
Last thought on ARRIVAL: Independence Day for pacifists. #Venezia73
Lieven Trio @l_trio
#Arrival is like #IndependenceDay for people with brains. Minimalistic scifi fable about acceptance. #Venezia73
