American Sniper
I saw this in Rave's "Xtreme", which is like some sort of IMAX wannabe format.
The "fuck yea Murrica" force is strong with this one, but once you peel that back, it's kind of a neat study on this one soldier's emotional journey. It's a solid film, tightly directed and edited, but also a bit inconsistent in rhythm. Cooper does some of his best work.
However, it's hard to find anything more special than that. The hero worship gets a bit annoying. The "villains" fall just short of mustache-twirling. A lot of it feels heavy-handed with the cliches. There have been a lot of better lead performances as well as films recently ...
