I love THE IRISHMAN so much because it’s far more than another gangland notch on Scorsese’s belt. It’s an American epic concerned with profound moral decay and a lifetime’s festering regret. De Niro is sublime. Pacino is electric, with Pesci the calming foil. And it flies by!

THE IRISHMAN is good! takes 90 minutes to lock in & clear out the cobwebs / adjust to CGI, but the scope is a virtue, the performances are killer (Joseph! Frank! Pesci!) & it eventually coheres into a heart-stopping meditation on the myopia of time. an old man movie for the ages.

Enjoyed Martin Scorsese’s THE IRISHMAN but it’s underwhelming in some ways and he’d be wise to cut 30-45 minutes from this very digressive 3 1/2 hour film. Clearly it’s his least-good mob movie.

The Irishman is a sprawling crime epic that plays like Scorsese’s Greatest Hits. Shows the effects of a life lived in and around crime through a De Niro performance that only gets better as the film progresses. Not quite on the level of Scorsese’s best but has plenty to admire.
My question now is: Which film will Netflix be riding on for being nominated for Best Picture; The Irishman or Marriage Story?
I expect they'll be campaigning hard for both movies, especially because neither is very much like the other.
The biggest competition for The Irishman is going to be Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. They're both movies by late-career auteurs who probably only have one or two left in them (hopefully not the case) and are slow paced contemplations of morality in a genre piece. They risk dividing the vote between each movie from a similar demographic so something else could beat both.

Again with this nonsense? Spielberg is said to have adored Roma and even CALLED himself several theater chains begging them to show the film.
