EXCLUSIVE: After sweeping the Oscars with his smash hit Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan looks to be returning to the studio that helped him win those Oscars, and he’s bringing along one of his A-list stars to lead the ensemble.
Sources tell Deadline that Nolan is returning to Universal for his next film, with plans for an Imax release on July 17, 2026, and that Matt Damon is in talks to star. The date falls in line with a number of Nolan films that have had similar release dates in the past.
Universal had no comment.
As with any Nolan project, plot details are being kept as secret as anything in this town, though sources say the film is expected to shoot in early 2025.
While some believed Nolan might have taken this package to market, Universal always seemed like the logical landing spot given the success of Oppenheimer, which grossed $328.9 million at the domestic box office and $975.6 million worldwide and brought in a number of accolades as well. The film won seven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director and acting prizes for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.
As for Damon, this will mark the third time he and Nolan have worked together, with Damon also appearing in 2014’s Interstellar before Oppenheimer, where Nolan has a knack for re-partnering with talent on projects; Damon now joins the likes of Christian Bale and Murphy as actors he have worked with Nolan on at least three occasions.
With the project now a full go, expect it to attract plenty of A-list talent to help Damon guide another all-star ensemble.
Although details are being kept in the bunker, sources say the project is not a big-screen take on 1960s British series The Prisoner, an endeavor Nolan contemplated in the 2000s.
After officially setting his next film at Universal and tapping Matt Damon to star, Christopher Nolan has set his sights on another A-lister to fill out this ensemble, with sources telling Deadline that Tom Holland is in talks to co-star.

Universal had no comment on the Holland talks.

As with any of his upcoming films, top-tier talent is always running at the opportunity to join a Nolan film, and it sounds like Holland has been high on the director’s list to star for some time. While this will mark the third time Damon and Nolan have worked together, it will mark the first time Holland and the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer director have teamed.
Sources tell Deadline that Anne Hathaway and Zendaya are set to star in his next event film.
Sources note that loglines or descriptions of the film that have been published to date are wrong, and details are being kept under wraps, though the movie is expected to start shooting in early 2025.
As with any of his films, top-tier talent is always running at the opportunity to join a Nolan film. While it will mark the first time Zendaya will appear in a Nolan film, this will mark the third movie for Hathaway, who previously appeared in The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar.

Nolan’s latest comes with even less plot or logline details than usual for the highly-secretive filmmaker. Various theoretical, even divergent, details been posited regarding the project – period vampire thriller, a helicopter action thriller – but insiders maintain that nothing has come close to nailing Nolan’s real idea.
Universal had no comment.

Tom Holland, take note: Christopher Nolan‘s new film for Universal is The Odyssey, an adaptation of the epic poem composed by Homer around the 8th century BCE, the studio has revealed.
“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” the studio announced on Monday in a message posted to X. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”
The ancient Greek poem from Homer tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, exploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and the struggle against divine will. The tale includes iconic episodes like his encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe, culminating in his reunion with his wife, Penelope.
