They are treating it as a major release with a very expensive marketing campaign.

How many biographical films/war dramas get billboards (with a countdown, no less) out on the streets almost a year in advance?

Also paying to advertise during BOTH of the AFC and NFC championship games is not cheap either, not Super Bowl level expensive but still, you’re not paying for those advertisements unless you plan to really push this film

Superbowl ads are so much more expensive, they usually are only used by films that are sure to get some payoff from it: big franchise movies that can still make tons of money if the film is garbage, and can quickly be recognized by the viewer. It's rare that they're used for films that are big gamble.
yeah, I agree, I don't think we're getting a Super Bowl spot. In 2022 the rate for a 38-second add was a ridiculous $6.5 million dollars.

Big movies aiming for the billion. Universal will be happy to make 500 millions with Oppenheimer, especially considering the other films in July, and the constant failure since Covid of big smart drama films.

It is expensive, but A LOT of people watch the Super Bowl, it is the singular most viewed event in America every single year

This article mentions some of the studios have bought ads to premiere during the show.
Disney on Friday said that the 95th Academy Awards broadcast set for Sunday has officially sold out of ad inventory from a wide range of brands and advertisers. As one would expect, the entertainment industry and related fields are particularly well represented.

Among the sponsors this year are Disney-owned Hulu and Walt Disney Motion Pictures, but also Universal, Sony, Warner Bros., Amazon, Snapchat and Paramount+.
Both Emily Blunt & Florence Pugh have been announced as presenters also.

Only other options are Mario Bros., Renfield, or Fast X...they don't seem like types of movies for a prestige award show.
