i keep seeing that theory, and while i love the concept i see no reason why nolan would leave such a dramatically and thematically infused story idea as guesswork for the audience. but then, that goes for the entire movie imo.

I watched this with 4 other people and I was the only one in the group who didn't interpret it this way. The other three all thought this theory to be true while watching. I do very much like this idea and the little lines of dialogue that could possibly set it up. Like you though it seems to be something Nolan would have given its moment. However his approach is hard to pinpoint in this film and very much different than before. For better and worse.

I explained the theory to a friend, waiting for him to be mind-blown, and he was like, wasn't it obvious?

going to save everyone a lot of time by saying barely a thing in Tenet makes an ounce of god damn sense and that's okay

This. What matters is the spectacle and surrealism clearly.

Hi everyone

Please could someone explain - I’ve seen the film twice now, and even more confused after the second viewing. I must be getting too old for these films

Two questions
Towards the start of the film, the wife mentions her husband going missing and seeing a woman diving off the boat ... so now the husband is dead ... so how does the plot now continue with The Protagonist meeting him etc etc

Secondly ... towards the end, how does the wife go back in time and is on the boat without an oxygen mask ...
Thanks in advance
I feel like this should be pinned somewhere because it’s a common question.
1. Kat mentions that when she and Max went back to the Yacht, Sator was missing. This Kat is the older version of herself. She hasn’t been shot yet. That version of Sator (the past Sator) left to Ukraine. Present Sator chooses to go back to that moment in Vietnam and kill himself there. Present Kat (the one who was shot) travels back to that moment and reverts.

Present Kat kills present Sator and past Kat sees present Kat jump off. She doesn’t see present Sator or knows he exists.

They all invert: they enter on the red side of the machine and come out on the blue side which enables them to travel back a week or two. Then they use another machine and enter on the blue side to exit on the red side and are now going forward in time - like normal.

Those who are inverted need inverted air. Once you revert you don’t need inverted air. She wasn’t inverted on Sator’s yacht. She was however inverted like the rest on that cargo ship, but they filled the whole space with inverted air so no one needs to wear a mask inside.

I don’t know if I explained it properly lol.
I dont understand how both Kat's were going forward?

Tenet is a very secret organization, and I just think Kat knows too much.So Priya thinks it's best to kill her

Think of inversion as time travel but instead of just jumping to a specific date and time, you have to go backwards from the moment you enter the turnstile to the point you want to reach. Just like time travel, you could observe your past self but you should not interact with your past self.

Kat and everyone else used inversion to go back in time to a day where three events happen:
1. Opera siege
2. Explosion in Siberia
3. Kat and Sator's holiday in Vietnam.

They are inverted and to the normal world they would seem to move backwards. Once they reached that point in time, they went back into an inversion machine to move forward through time again. Now, they're moving forward normally.

More than one Kat can exist at the same time. We see Neil looking at the his past self and the Protagonist running at the freeport trying to get to the corridor. We also see versions of them in the background exiting the shipping container and heading to the freeport to revert Kat - while present Neil, Prot. and Kat are in the vehicle moving away from the freeport.

I imagine it’s to protect the rest of the world of everything Tenet stands for and what had (or could have) just happened. The mere knowledge of inversion mechanics working could have severe results if ending up, once again, in the wrong hands. So Priya wasn’t necessarily acting as a secondary antagonist, she was more so cleaning up. I’m just wondering if it’s Kat only, or ultimately, everyone involved in the story in any capacity.

Well Ives and then agreed to end their lives at the end, so I’d imagine she would have a target on them as well. As far as Kat goes I think it’s because of her relationship to Sator, and Prius might see it as a risk keeping her alive
