He's probably hearing the actors. Although they wont probably record direct sound for the final product, they record it anyway as a reference for the ADR.
Nolan doesn't do ADR, or shall I say tries to avoid it as much as possible.
Dunkirk is apparently ADR-free
I know.
But in some cases it's just not possible.

Hmmm...looking at the earlier picture of Washington and these props, maybe he plays a firefighter in the movie?

I'm thinking he's not a firefighter.. but he steals the equipment to pretend to be one in order to do whatever the hell happens in this movie
What if Nolan's two main inspirations for this movie are Ladder 49 and Backdraft? What then? What then?
