If the plot structure goes over the general audience's head like it did with Jeremy Jahns, this movie is gonna be in deep trouble at the box office. I wonder how WB's test screenings have gone with the regular moviegoing public (not critics).
Dunkirk Official Reviews Discussion
^ You are exactly correct. I will just reiterate that character development does not always mean backstory though. This film lacks character development because it lacks plot. Nolan intended for this. Stuckmann understood this, Jahns did not (or at least did not agree with it). Because of this, I'd say follow Stuckmann's review much more closely.

there were rumours that it wasn't testing well so I kind of expect a disconnect between critics and GA

Yeah, I have a feeling that if this film had been about Pearl Harbor or any other event that Mr. Jahns heard about while growing up, he would understand its immense significance and be able to just get into it.rickfox wrote:I guess I have to find out my self about what Jeremy Jahns called 'character' issue and 'boring' issue, well in about 36 hours,DHOPW42 wrote:I just read a Hungarian review (written by one of the more popular Hungarian movie sites).
They gave it 8 out of 10, saying that the direction, writing and so on are brilliant - but the whole thing feels a bit "artificial". They also said that it's more like this film had a blueprint, rather than a screenplay.
I think it is clear now that this is where people will end up being divided, and it reminds me a lot of how certain composers or poets can end up criticized for being "too academic" in their creative process. I wouldn't dare compare Nolan to Beethoven, but good old Ludwig got the same sort of criticisim for some of his work - being too pedantic, too "artificial", too academic. Still, people are divided on those pieces, much as people seem to be divided on this film in a way. I think the majority of those saying that Dunkirk isn't that good say that it just feels too distant and mechanic. Though it's weird to see that some of the reviews say the complete opposite: that this is Nolan's most emotional film to date. I really don't know what to think now... eagerly waiting for my Thursday screening!
but I may end up agree with Chris Stuckmann and those critics/media review, because I have being collect and study military history (as amateur)for the last twenty years.
those above(middle section) are only small portion of air battle histories(including few German published works --- provide information regards air warfare between Third Reich and Britain ) relevant to Battle of Britain, I haven't even bring in combat histories of those Kampfgeschwader,Jagdgeschwader,Zerstörergeschwader units which participated in the Battle of Britain or the archive/documents from both side.
my collection of Operation Dynamo( plus ground ,naval ,air operations ground or over Dunkirk area undertook by German and British ) research works/ documents is not as much as those of Battle of Britain( about half ), but read and study most of them is make me consider it is possible that Jeremy Jahns's complain about 'character' and 'boring' is because of his own ignorance on certain matters.
I can understand Chris Stuckmann's statement---- in that reality of war(the RAF can't hold on for ever, nor can the Royal Navy & civilian's 'fleet'),those soldiers sailers and nco/officers don't have bloody space or time to show you their well developed characters.
It's even more disappointing because he specifically said that he regretted rushing out a review of Interstellar after one viewing because that film grew on him.redfirebird2008 wrote:If the plot structure goes over the general audience's head like it did with Jeremy Jahns, this movie is gonna be in deep trouble at the box office. And yet, he does the exact same thing again.

Maybe I'm wrong and ignorant (as pumped as I am for this movie, I'm otherwise not a fan of the genre), but I'm not aware of a WW2 movie since Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor that has had big mass appeal, at least not on a blockbuster level.ArmandFancypants wrote:WhatInnovator wrote:The thing is, a WW2 movie is not a movie made for the "general public",
But the story structure might prove to be more critical than the setting/genre. I for one am hella curious to see how he managed to pull it off and I'm glad this is not a "run-of-the-mill" war movie.
thank you sirMuffinMcFluffin wrote:Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.rickfox wrote:sorry, he has what?mosh89 wrote:
