Dumb question
So why did hardy land so far into enemy territory and not parachute out? And why burn the plane?

I think because he didn't want the enemy to use it.

That's what I thought. And he was forced to land on the enemy territory because he couldn't open the landing gears as quickly as possible.

The Spitfire landing was sort of based on a real story right? The pilot in this article also landed his plane on the beaches, and was captured by the Germans too: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... tored.html

That was probably not because he was out of fuel though, but still.
