So it looks like for people in Chicago the best option is going to be 70MM Film, since I don't see any theatres that are getting the IMAX 15/70 Film OR are IMAX Laser Digital. Is that what everyone else is seeing?

Seems that way for the immediate Chicago area. If you are willing to make a 3 hour drive, this is probably the best option:

62 foot tall IMAX in 15/70 film. Tickets here:

After seeing INSTERSTELLAR in 15/70 at AMC Metreon IMAX in San Fran, I was ready for the Laser revolution. A bad projectionist and/or a mishandling of the print can really affect the experience. As an IMAX fan, I felt guilty for thinking that tho.

And after seeing the prologue in Laser this winter, I felt relieved. It's not quite the same, but overall it's consistent and great. 100% of Laser showings will probably beat a majority of 15/70 projections.

I'm excited to be seeing it in 4K Laser, I just wish i wasn't driving 3.5 hrs to do so.

Yeah, I wish a lot of the old 15/70 locations waited a few years before converting to digital. They ended up stuck with 2k digital that doesn't look very good on the giant screen. But I guess they figure most ticket buyers don't care and Nolan is pretty much the only filmmaker who is actually serious about the 1.43 ratio, so they probably figure the 1.9 ratio Xenon projector gets the job done just fine for 99.9% of the movies they play on those screens.

The 4k Laser installation is not cheap and I can see why they don't want to spend the money yet on it, especially after spending a pretty good chunk of change on the 2k Xenon installation in the first place.

To those asking about Chicago, the situation is dire.

There are three theaters that can play 15/70 film, and Lincolnshire and Cinemark Seven Bridges were not even offered IMAX prints on film. WB cut them out completely. Woodridge wanted the print, I get the sense Lincolnshire didn't.

Navy Pier is a clusterfuck. AMC took over, did renovations until November 2016, and were supposed to close again early spring to rebuild the entire theater and open for summer. They closed LATE. Why? Not 100% sure, could be AMC's fuck up or could be Navy Pier union problems (Chicago is a big union city), but either way most likely won't open until August. Jury is out on if it'll get a digital print to play in August.

To reinforce what Teddy said, having seen both 15/70 and laser IMAX (prologue) the quality difference between the two is marginal compared to the other formats when both are shown in ideal conditions. Laser is brighter, has more perceived sharpness, and has better motion. 15/70 is richer, more dynamic, dimensional, and has a more powerful visceral effect.

Think it's just a new one WB came up with.
