If anything, VR could add to the immersion.

“Valerian” premieres in the heart of the summer, putting it up against sequels to “Transformers” and “Despicable Me.” It debuts on July 21, the same weekend as “Dunkirk,” a World War II epic from director Christopher Nolan. Internally, there has been debate about the studio’s decision to keep that release date instead of pushing it back to August, when there is less competition.

Then that could cut into Dunkirk's legs, couldn't it?

I actually want Valerian to stay, so we can have the most interesting box office showdown of the year. :P

It will truly be the definitive test of whether Mr. Nolan's name alone can help a serious war film beat out a family-friendly sci-fi adventure film.

Well yeah it would be interesting to see how these two blockbusters fare off against each other. On the other hand, I think there's barely any buzz on Valerian and I'm not so sure it's going to be a good film to begin with. It does look pretty, but so far only a CG-fest. They're basically the exact opposite from each other lol
Yeah I guess pushing it back a few weeks can cut into Dunkirk's legs, so perhaps it's better to crush the competition right away  but I don't like such thinking lol

I guess they'll stay put, instead of a last minute decision to push the release back.

Shit on this movie all you want, you'll still watch it anyway. And if you won't, then why are you here?

Not really. I think Valerian is going to bomb no matter where they release it.
