I don't think he had much of a decision to make. Caine's character made it pretty clear to him.

Leaving your children is an emotional decision, not a logical one. It's a believable choice, but it's emotionally and dramatically wobbly to spend so little time on it.

The jump from saying goodbye to his kids straight to launch didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. I quite liked that sequence.

The editing was definitely non-traditional. It was also very responsible for the pacing in the climaxes of the movie. I find it so hard to judge though because there are almost no films where you have to deal with nonlinear narrative, time lapses, and time dilation to compare it to. I have to watch it again.

Has anyone who read Jonah's 2008 draft seen the movie? If so, how much has changed/how different is the final product (without spoilers, of course)?
