I am a pretty big fan of Batman and superhero movies in general, but I actually feel like Nolan's Batman movies have had a bigger impact outside the genre than inside the genre.
Superman: The Movie, Batman '89, and Spider-Man are the most influential superhero movies ever made. Batman Begins helped influence Casino Royale and a bunch of other reboots outside the superhero genre. The Dark Knight had a big influence on Skyfall, Star Trek Into Darkness, etc.
In terms of the current state of superhero movies, you could argue that the first Iron Man has had the biggest impact of the last 10 years. If that film flopped, then the Marvel Cinematic Universe never would have gotten off the ground. A whole bunch of movies never would have been made as a result.

2001 might be the most influential movie of the last 50 years. It's the best sci-fi movie ever made and its influence cannot be understated today, especially as we look at films like Gravity, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, and an upcoming Star Wars movie. 2001 is perhaps the best example of a mainstream art film and it is a miracle that the movie was able to succeed the way it did.
Influential perhaps, but what classifies it as the best sci-fi ever made? I remember back when I was first getting into watching classic movies and I was excited to watch the film, but I was sorely disappointed. Much the same can be said for Orson Welle's Citizen Kane though that one ends up with a much higher score objectively due to the top notch acting and editing. On the other hand, acting and editing felt pretty much non-existent in 2001.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have no arguments that both these films were technical wonders, but the pacing and story leave one desiring much better from films that are supposed to be among the greatest of all time. In actuality I would say they are the greatest 'style over substance' films ever made...
Film is a combination of arts. You can not compare directors with Da Vinci. Kubrick is one of the greatest, that's for sure. He has his own style and to compare him with Nolan in that aspect is absurd.

I admit Kubrick was talented and his films have many moments of brilliance, but I also feel that the only completely satisfying film he made is 'The Killing' and even that falls short of Nolan's best, for me...

Is it really that bad that this has gone off topic? There's tons of pages of reviews here way back in this thead, and there haven't been so many new ones so we dont know what to do right now. We're waiting for a new batch. In the mean time where just people talking on a forum dedicated to Nolan and essentialy rambling about Nolan and film. But perhaps you are right, maybe it's gone too far. Perhaps it should be moved to some other thread at this point. I don't see the harm but if it's starting to piss multiple people off then maybe we shodd move it somewhere else or forget it and get back to the topic.
