I consider Interstellar to be sort of a spiritual successor to this under-appreciated gem.

Only just discovered this thread (I don't usually stray off the first page of threads) and I just have to say...Mission to Mars underappreciated gem???!!!!! I thought it was a crap cheesefest. Seriously one of the worst space movies I've ever seen. That alien at the end? Snicker. It looked bad even at the time. Perfect example of why practical effects > CGI.
