people hear this quote and expect some documentary about interstellar travel? by shooting it like a documentary he's almost certainly referring to how the camera is held, the aesthetics of the shots, the pacing, and perhaps narrative composition. it's not gonna be the characters talking to the audience or anything like that. it's not a mockumentary.

Not documentary like that damn it...

Ever seen Contact? Every part of that movie is a well constructed, believable tale, it's grounded in reality ala Michael Crichton tale, same goes for Interstellar.

Yeah I'm not sure why people are having questions about this. He literally means freedom to move the camera around because he's built real sets that are large enough that he can frame the shot from any angle he so chooses, just like shooting on location. He's done this on every large film he's made. Inception is the best example with it's use of hand held.

Handheld with IMAX cameras? Hoytema would've broken his collarbone or torn his rotator cuff multiple times if that were the case.

There's camera stabilizers , dollies...For TDKR they even brought Scott Sakamoto to handle that.

Also i dont know how much of it will be in Imax. I remember Wally said when Inception got released , that most of it was hand-held.
