I remember an interview with Wally Pfister in which he said Nolan was very disappointed with not being nominated for Best Director for Inception. And it was kind of awkward that he was nominated and not Nolan. So of course he cares. But Nolan is a true gentleman and he doesn't need some golden statue from a popularity contest like a certain Leonardo DiCaprio.
He doesn't need it.
If the movie is good, receiving great reviews and becoming a blockbuster, it will be enough to be nominated for the Oscars.

So it lost money. There is always a sort of built in audience for thrillers, so Gone Girl can benefit from that (and from readers who, unlike me, liked the book), but it is still a dicey proposition. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike are not box office draws, Fincher is to some degree but I bet that's a very expensive movie and they need to get bums in seats.

Inherent Vice? I'd say its box office prospects are non-existent. The Master (which was a great film but a lot of people hated it) only made $16 million domestic US. They didn't reveal the budget, but it was obviously high so it lost a ton of money. I like P.T. Anderson but he isn't anyone the public actually knows or goes out of their way to see his films. I love Joaquin Phoenix but most people can't stand him. He may be a NEGATIVE box office draw actually!
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a popular book in the U.S.? Gone Girl is a popular book in the U.S., this will help the box office opening, if the movie is well received, has a good word of mouth will be enough to make a good box office.

I think Girl Gone will be shown only at NYFF, because a week later it will debut in theaters.

I don't know about Inherent Vice, I don't read the book, so I guess it will really need the Festival.

I saw on the Awards Circuit site that Interstellar is rumoured for Venice FF. Is that site reliable? I haven't read any rumours about it going to Venice :problem:
Also, do you think Interstellar could be shown at LFF?

Zero chance that a $200+ million Warner Bros./Paramount co-production plays a festival two months ahead of release.

When someone asked is it Interstellar, @raysubers replies:
No, the other $200+ million Warner Bros./Paramount co-production that's coming out later this year.

Birdman closes NYFF. So there you go. Now you can all rest and leave the rumour machine in peace.

Besides the fact that you probably haven't seen either of these two films making it ridiculous to compare them, I'm interested in how you define "masterpiece" - Are you one of those superficial turds that thinks anything seemingly dramatic, serious, and/or grandiose in scope and subject matter is what constitutes "masterpiece"? Please.

You're the reason the term "epic" has been so degraded today, in that it has become a descriptor exclusive of overwrought genre filmmaking.

How about this: ***Boyhood is a more honest and HUMAN movie compared to Interstellar***

And even if it was only "cute" compared to Interstellar, I am willing to bet you that it is still most likely the better film.

But that won't matter to you, because you're a Nolanite - You'd rather an overwrought, obnoxious, contrived, artificial, and emotionally manipulative film than one that captures beauty and profundity in its honesty, intimacy, and simplicity. Enjoy that, cretin.
