It varies on the film and often times its success. I remember seeing that Avatar was still in theaters in March, when it came out in December. Hell, the DVD was out.

Avatar had a re-release not too long after it went out of theaters.

You have to remember: 3D. Also, yes, Avatar had a rerelease in August 2010.
