Nolan when interviewed on the BBC Radio Five movie show talked about Batman's ultimate sacrifice at the end of this movie, and it makes no sense that the character could have escaped the blast. I think they should have ended there with the blast and maybe a cut to Bruce Wayne's grave and then one of the Batman statue. However the scene where Alfred sees Bruce in the Italian cafe is explained earlier in the film when Alfred tells Bruce he often sits in that cafe and imagines him there. I've a feeling the two little scenes - one with the autopilot and the other with Alfred may have been tacked on by studio interference. However another point is that the Lazarus Pit was also spoken about in the film so resurrection seems something of a theme buried within the subtext.
I loved the film, but thought it was a little long and I don't think Bane was a worthy character.I think The Dark Knight remains Nolan's best Batman movie

The point of Batman is not to remain as one person, it is a symbol that can never die. Bruce may have moved on but we have the man that took up his mantle.
