The higher resolution is for Retina Display compatibility. Users on computers with Retina Displays (or the Chrome Pixel hahaha) will see the higher resolution avatar.
Why not for Windows users?
I don't think Windows supports or has any HiDPI devices.

A screenshot isn't really going to communicate the difference. On a Retina Display, the screen is at such a high resolution everything would naturally look really half it's normal size. But what the software does is display it at a normal size, but twice the resolution. So if we didn't support the higher resolution images, they would look blown up or pixelated.

I thought Windows 8 supports them. Oh well, I use Windows 7 anyway.

I haven't a clue, but the site would be fine then. Doesn't matter if you don't have a hi-dpi screen anyways.

I'm not sure what's difficult about this concept y'all. If you don't have a retina, or some other hi-dpi screen, it doesn't matter.

Think of it this way. We're delivering a 720p and 1080p signal, but you only see the 1080p one if you have a 1080p TV.

The font sizes are ridiculous, can we change this in a menu somewhere or is it stuck like this?

Even if you have a Mac with a Retina Display, the avatars won't look any bigger. They'll still be displayed at 180x100 but they'll look sharp because the source file is actually 360x200.

Batman News also supports Retina Displays. The preview thumbnails for each post are 340x220:

But if you view it on a Retina Display, it loads a 680x440 version into that same 340x220 area:

That's what enables images to look crisp and sharp on a Retina Display.

Wow. Some of you obviously don't like change. I mean, maybe it's just me, but the reason I signed up for an account here wasn't because I could have a cool avy, or because of the PM features, or this, or that.
