This sounds much better then what CrazyEight is going on about.
The perfect transfer to me encompasses a perfect mix of clarity and film grain. Example: Blade Runner, a perfect transfer in my opinion. Unless of course the film is shot digitally, then clarity is all I require. From the screenshots Inception seems to have a nice balance, but I reserve judgement until I watch the Blu ray.
It's not going to stop me from watching it, but I'm not paying 20-30 dollars for a film to look underpar. The Dark Knight looks terribly below average.
+1
Unless I really love the movie, I won't buy it if it has a shitty transfer. I bought The Dark Knight of course, and even payed 50 bucks for it.
You see I didn't buy the uber edition of Dark Knight, shockingly. I just wasn't impressed by them and there was like no definitive version. All the stores were trying to cash in. I guess the bike was the official like badass one. Well I've got the suitcase thingy for INCEPTION. At least I know the transfer is superb.

I didn't get the special edition of The Dark Knight, and I won't for Inception either. I found a place online in NY that was selling the Blu ray a couple weeks early but I had to pay 20 bucks for shipping, that's why it cost so much. But since you live in NY you get all the early stuff without spending the extra dough you lucky sob.
Good, Inception isn't the kind of film that should have a grainy quality. Some films work well with it, but I don't think that Inception would.
It's indicative of the source format. It was shot on 35mm film; therefore some type of grain, not heavy grain, but the fine film grain that the master format has should be visible on the Blu ray. If Nolan didn't want the "film look" he wouldn't have shot it on film...
Not all 35mm film is created equal. As Roman said, the amount of grain is largely determined by the type of film stock. Faster stock means a lot of grain whereas slower stock means far less grain. I saw Inception 5 times in the theater and don't remember it having a noticeable amount of grain.

Yeah I bought TDK two weeks early from this spot in SoHo LOL.

I agree, Blade Runner is the best Blu Ray I've seen. The thing is, I've never had trouble with a Blu Ray transfer before, and so I'm not half as worried as the people who had TDK on Blu Ray are (I only got a Blu Ray player this year).
The best Blu Ray I have seen is casino royale. Must say it looks better then Blade Runner. Blade Runner does look good tho. Most films made around the same time don't look very good on Blu Ray.
I'm not in love with the Blade Runner transfer. It looks amazing in spots and lackluster in others. Casino Royale is great, Saving Private Ryan incapsulates more of what CrazyEight is talking about than Blade Runner. Crank, though terrible movie, has a great transfer, though it's shot in 1080p on 1/3rd chip sensor cameras lmao.
