There is a support group online for people who are suffering from depression after seeing the film. They are depressed because they can't live in that world. On the same site there are people who became broke after seeing the film so many times, people who broke up with their boyfriends/girlfriends because they talked about the film all the time, and even people who got fired from their jobs because they would skip work to see Avatar.

I think this is Christopher Nolan playing his hand at marketing, and I'm sure these film have undeniably had some sort of impact on Chris; however when you mention films such as Star Wars, Avatar, Michael Bay films, and The Matrix it helps, by association, to foster a larger anticipation on the wider film public.
I have a cousing that is quite a Star Wars nerd
