That's exactly what I thought when I saw that footage in the featurette. I think Nolan likes planes a lot. Ho got to use them while filming and traveling to six different countires.

Maybe some of the shots were filmed while they travelled.

Nolan is known for his efficiency, but I don't think he could even pull that off.

I reckon he's very good planning his production as you say he could have done that only if it was comfortable for everyone on the crew, etc.

I wonder why they needed that many planes, though. I was assuming that most of the locations were in the dream world, so they didn't need to physically travel there.

Nolan wanted this sense of reality for the dreams, is one of the premises.
he also doesn't like to leave that kind of stuff entirely to post.
