From a german interview with the Quays:
"In 2015 Christopher Nolan filmed a short documentary about you. How did the world's commercial director want to make a movie about you?

Very exciting. The best thing was that he came to our studio, which is our house, and filmed with a 35 mm camera that he operated himself. And he knows very well what he is doing, when he was a young man doing experimental films. He sees the animation like us and realizes that the miniatures have their own kingdom and it is immense. And one year after doing the short, he offered to produce a movie with the condition that it would not last more than 25 minutes and that we shot it in 35 mm. And, clear, we accepted charmed. We sent a kind of script and confessed that he understood nothing but did not matter because he trusted us. We finished filming a month ago and now we are working on the assembly."

So he's producing but not directing or writing. Interesting. Still cool.

I'd like Nolan to produce more new talent outside of directing. He'd really put some newcomers on the map with modest budget debuts.

The part below is clearly speaking about Nolan haha
There was an degree of pressure at the Quays Atelier Koninck QbfZ. A mysterious benefactor had about a year and half earlier commissioned the Quays to make a film. Not a specific item for him personally. But, generously, to do what they did best. Make their own idea into a film. Institutions around the world aren’t exactly lining up to fund their films in this age of bottom line financial mania. The Quays were actually mid-way through another project when this person approached them. But since it was digital and he being interested in film rather than digital creations, he wasn’t so keen on it. One of his stipulations was that it be shot on 35mm film stock with their old cameras. But he basically said here’s a certain amount. Would you like to make a a real film out of it? What could they say? Why, yes! And now he was coming to check out what they had done on the 19th of December. And I had arrived on the 12th. So essentially my visit was a break in round-the-clock filming and editing (digitally then transferred back to film stock).

The Doll's Breath

After three years of painstaking animation and production, tonight, Wednesday 11 September, sees the world premiere of The Doll’s Breath, the new 22-minute animated film from the Brothers Quay. It will be a Special Screening at the 25th Edition of the L’ÉTRANGE Festival held at the Forum Des Images, Paris.

There will be a repeat screening on Friday and the Brothers are attending both, and conducting a Q&A afterwards. The film is inspired by Felisberto Hernández’s Las Hortensias and is the second time that the Brothers have based a film on his fantastical stories. In this one Horacio, a former window dresser, sets up complicated charades where women and life-sized dolls change places in a web of jealousy, betrayal and murder.

The film was commissioned by Syncopy Films Inc, the production company owned and run by Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, both acting as very involved and engaged Executive Producers. The film was shot on 35mm film and will be presented in Scope. The Brothers write:

For over 15 years now, since we last shot on 35mm film, we have had two classic 35mm Mitchell cameras being casually used as doorstops here in the studio. So it was particularly pleasing when Christopher Nolan should arrive on the scene to commission a new animation short film from us ‘on condition that we shoot on 35mm film’. Now we have reason to have one less doorstop and one resurrected camera.”

The film was processed and patiently guided through Cinelab London by Adrian Bull and grader Paul Dean, who did an extraordinary job with a web of startling images. The mesmerising 20-minute music track is by Michèle Bokanowski, whilst Joakim Sundstrom and Doug Cooper supervised the soundtrack at W.B. De Lane Lea.

After the Paris screenings the film will start a journey through other festivals worldwide.
