@18:00 minutes
Completely agree with him. That's one of my main issue with Nolan.

Well, I think the puzzle piece he's missing is if the filmmaker finds creating multiple distinct experiences a valid expression of their vision and craft.

Some may find Dunkirk plays better more "claustrophobic" in 70mm than the epic vistas of 1.43, for instance, and neither is more inherently valid than the other. It's a question of how comprehensive and intentioned each version is.

There is a reason why filmmakers do not switch aspect ratio back and forth. They strive to make it a seamless experience rather than a slideshow for audience. Nolan himself laments we don't have tech to have quiet imax film cameras so it just seems he embraced the flawed approach as best that was possible. Standard 70mm is one third the size of imax frame - kills immersion like nothing else. Look how Avatar 2 is being criticised for variable HFR.

There will be a different effect when you view something in different aspect ratio. Youtube shorts and tik tok and reels make it evident. But we can not say cropped version of sams scene aligns with the intention of filmmaker. Additionally no one can choose to watch Dunkirk in full 1.43 at home. Nolan's focus seems to be theatres only and your projection of 'choice' is just your own mental projection.

However, Spielberg doesn’t want anyone to forget the mistake of not nominating one particular film: “It came late for the film that should have been nominated a number of years ago, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight.’ That movie would have definitely garnered a Best Picture Nomination today, so having these two blockbusters solidly presented on the top 10 list is something we should all be celebrating.”
