I like how Nolan acknowledged (unless I misunderstood) that film criticism is important, and it shows to those who think he doesn’t care or pay attention to it that it ain’t true. Even if he said so because some critics could be watching, the guy most likely has given attention to some of it nonetheless. At least, for me, some of the improvements he's made serve as example of awareness to it.
I think he mentioned Tarkovsky as an inspiration? Among other directors.

always thought the torture scene at the beginning of Tenet is a nod to Tarkovsky's Stalker: train tracks and all that...
