I would argue he hasn’t really elevated into the upper echelon of the great film directors until he’s weathered withering scorn and criticism from the commentariat writ large; which is basically what’s going on now with commentators insinuating that he is totally cool with people getting sick and dying as long as his movie gets to come out, which is false on its face.
