I’ve noticed people are more prone to ‘forgive’ male actors for starring in shitty films, because hey, making some coins isn’t something to be ashamed of. But while they sure did gain tons of exposure, the way people treated (and some still can’t let go) both Johnson and Stewart, was so fucking shitty.

Women will always receive more criticism I fear. Guys seem to get a pass when it comes to certain things.

I like both those actresses, and while I don't care for those films I'm happy they were in films that help them gain audience recognition. As long as they are in decent films too I'll keep following them.

This is totally off topic lol

I completely agree, but the two film franchises they starred in are considered by many to be two of the worst talked about and most hated popular film franchises of the past two decades. Not sure the men in those films have been forgiven either. I see plenty of hate headed toward Robert Pattinson online, even though the guy is not a bad actor.

Not justifying or defending the amount of hate they got and the way they were treated, but their faces were practically engraved with these terrible franchises certain groups of people were completely obsessed with to an unhealthy degree. I think for this specific point about gender to be had, there are better examples to use.

Agreed.

Add to that the fact female characters like that are intentionally written as empty characters. So then, when the actresses attempt to play the roles faithfully, they're still criticized for it.

On r/DC_cinematic someone shared an interview where Dakota Johnson expressed interest in being Catwoman. The comments were terrible. There were a few that completely insulted her looks and one dude said "Keep that 50 shades shit away from the DCEU" because like none of the DCEU actors starred in shit movies before starting in shitty DC movies.

Dakota was amazing in Bad Times at the El Royale. Looking forward to Suspiria now and that thriller with Armie Hammer and Zazie Beetz.

I don’t think Dornan has ever garnered hate to a degree Dakota has. I wonder why... So yeah, these examples are pretty spot on lol. Pattinson got away “easier” because he openly showed strong disdain towards those films. Johnson, iirc, pretty much “owned” 50 shades and showed zero shame or embarrassment for doing them. And honestly? That’s pretty great, and I say that as someone who disliked the first film (the only one I saw). A part of the issue has to be that men... kind of hate when women get to have their spin on sexual fantasy in film and that sort of shit. Actresses can be hot and naked as long as they fully submerge to the male gaze, otherwise it’s trash, slutty and stupid. Not saying 50 shades are in any way empowering or even good. But you know it’s true.

Besides, even when guys get “hate”, it has to be pretty unfortunate for them to start getting insults aimed at their appearance. For actresses, it’s probably so fucking normal at this point.

Dakota was great in El Royale and I can’t wait for Suspiria too. She’s in for a good career imo. And she lowkey makes me want to get bangs lmao

I gotta admit, I really didn't care for Dakota until I saw El Royale. She was great and she look really stunning.

acting is a job every actor is going to work to get money to live. no actor in their right mind would turn down a mindless blockbuster unless they have the luxury to do so

I think lots of people forget about this. Actors like Daniel Day Lewis and Christian Bale focus so much on and talk about the preparation for each role and how much time they invest into becoming their characters that lots of people think all actors should take the same approach.

No offense to DDL and CB because what they do is great and works for them, but I think people need to realize that a lot of acting is just getting a paycheck and then going home.
