Going forward, I'll only post non-election news and discussion in the threads of Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

CNBC - Harris and Biden speak to campaign staff after Democrats top $250 million in contributions, donor pledges [in 24 hours]
In the hours since President Joe Biden announced that he would end his teetering reelection campaign, Harris and the Democratic party have pulled in roughly $250 million in online donations and major donor commitments.

The Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue has processed $106 million in contributions to Democratic candidates since Biden dropped out, according to an automated tracker.

It is not clear yet how much of this money was given to House and Senate campaigns and how much went to the former Biden campaign, rebranded overnight as the Harris’ for President campaign.

A Trump pollster warned of a "Harris Honeymoon" but called for calm in an internal memo sent to the rattled campaign.

Donald Trump’s running mate can’t claim he knew nothing about the extremist Project 2025 after this.

Politico - Sen. Mark Kelly, a Harris veep contender, rips into JD Vance on Ukraine
The two senators are on the opposite end of the spectrum on the issue of Ukraine aid.
Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a contender to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, tore into Republican Vice President nominee Sen. JD Vance on Wednesday, saying Vance would “abandon” Ukraine in favor of Russia.

“It’s pretty clear to me you’ve got JD Vance who wants to totally abandon Ukraine, and you’ve got Donald Trump who has been in the past rather pro-Russia and leaned in with Vladimir Putin in ways I would never expect the president to do,” Kelly said in a brief interview with POLITICO. “So again, we have a serious choice to make, and I’d be really concerned about what those guys would do to abandon an ally in favor of an adversary. And that would be a much more dangerous world.”

The Daily Beast - Kamala Harris Is Vetting Two Women on Her VP Shortlist
A team led by former Attorney General Eric Holder reportedly began requesting information Wednesday from a strategic list of governors, legislators and cabinet officials.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is reportedly on the list—as is Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, both of whom would make history if selected by Harris.

Whitmer, who is co-chairing Harris’ campaign, has previously said she is not interested in joining her on the ticket.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are also on the reported shortlist, as is Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who won two terms in a state that Trump carried by 26 points in the 2020 presidential election.

Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, who represents a crucial swing state that Biden won by only about 10,000 votes, is also reportedly being vetted.

The list also included California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who also took himself out of the running, sources told NBC News.

Several Biden Administration officials are also under consideration, including Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Raimondo.

Another name who has previously been floated is retired four-star Admiral William McRaven, who oversaw the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011.

Sources confirmed to CBS News that at least one candidate on the list, whose name was not shared publicly, was not currently serving in government.

Robert F Kennedy JR endorsed a more compassionate plan for anyone recovering from addiction like him that would help people build skills. It's a more favorable thing than what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris did, having the system people lock away people for a long time for drugs. Their record on civil rights is a joke. Biden and Harris are a joke. The Democrat party has become a joke.

Count up the lies in that statement.

This is all racist whitesplaining bull****.

She has better than most qualifications as:
* elected San Francisco, CA District Attorney (2004-2011)
* elected CA state Attorney General (2011-2017)
* elected CA federal U.S. Senator (2017-2021)
* elected U.S. Vice President (2021-2024)

None of this counts for anything according to white supremacists.

I have Harris in the 250~280 EV range (270 needed to win). Hopefully I can raise the ceiling higher after the VP+convention.

Remember Clinton led the popular vote in 2016 by 2 points and that equated out to 232 EV (before faithless electors). I think right now Harris’s floor is higher than Clinton’s and with a lower ceiling than 2020 Biden’s (306 EV).

Daily Kos - Harris wins Democratic nomination—here’s how the virtual vote worked

CNN - CNN - Harris selects Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be VP running mate, sources say
JUST IN: Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, according to multiple sources. They will appear together in their first joint rally in Philadelphia later today before visiting other battleground states this week.
Associated Press - AP Sources: Harris selects [Minnesota Governor] Walz as running mate

Vice President Kamala Harris (Instagram) wrote:I am proud to announce that I’ve asked @walzforgovernor to be my running mate.

One of the things that stood out to me about Tim is how his convictions on fighting for middle class families run deep. It’s personal.

He grew up in a small town in Nebraska, spending summers working on his family’s farm. His father died of cancer when he was 19, and his family relied on Social Security survivor benefit checks to make ends meet. At 17, he enlisted in the National Guard, serving for 24 years. He used his GI Bill benefits to go to college, and become a teacher. He served as both the football coach and the advisor of the Gay-Straight Alliance.

I share this background both because it’s impressive in its own right, and because you see in no uncertain terms how it informs his record. He worked with Republicans to pass infrastructure investments. He cut taxes for working families. He passed a law to provide paid family and medical leave to Minnesotan families.

He made Minnesota the first state in the country to pass a law providing constitutional abortion protections after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and as an avid hunter, he passed a bill requiring universal background checks for gun purchases.

But what impressed me most about Tim is his deep commitment to his family: Gwen, Gus, and Hope. Doug and I look forward to working with him and Gwen to build an administration that reflects our shared values.

Whether you are a supporter, a volunteer, a donor, a member of our staff, or your name is on the ticket: you are part of the people-powered campaign that is going to defeat Donald Trump.

We are going to build a great partnership. We are going to build a great team. We are going to win this election.

So let’s get to work. Join our campaign at the link in my bio.

CBS News - Minnesota is ranked 6th in the nation for business, a new study finds

Could Tim Walz go from teaching history to being part of it? (August 2)
Former classmates and colleagues talk about the teacher and coach who went into politics and is now believed to be on Kamala Harris’s short list for a running mate.
Former students say they don’t remember Walz ever being overly ideological in the classroom, and yet, none were particularly surprised when he first made the jump into public service. The idea to run for office first came to Walz in 2004, he has previously said, after he and several of his students were blocked from entering a political rally for former president George W. Bush because one of the kids was spotted with a John F. Kerry sticker. He won a congressional seat in 2006, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives until after he won the 2018 gubernatorial election.

Before all that, he was the linebacker coach who helped turn around a winless football squad into state champions, while earning the trust of his players.

“I don’t want to be dramatic about it, but he maybe saved my life,” says Daniel Clement, a former linebacker who says he hung out with the wrong crowd before Walz showed him a kind of attention on and off the field he’d never experienced from a teacher before. “I was devoted to him, like, ‘Fine, I’ll keep going to school so I can play for you. I’ll keep training hard so I can try and win for you.’”
And in the mid-’90s, it was Walz who offered to be the first faculty adviser to the newly formed gay-straight alliance.
Labor likes Gov. Tim Walz for vice president — and other labor news • Minnesota Reformer (August 2)

IJR - House Dems Like Tim Walz for Harris VP Pick (August 2)
“Walz was the highest-ranking enlisted soldier in the history of Congress.

House Democrats now tout him as an asset to the Democratic ticket.

“My sentimental favorite is Tim Walz,” said Rep. Jim McGovern (Mass.), the lead Democrat on the Rules Committee. “He was a great member of Congress. The people I know in Minnesota tell me he’s a great governor… But more importantly he’s a good guy. He’s down to earth, he’s the real deal, there’s nothing phony about him, and he calls ‘em as he sees ‘em, and he tells it like it is, and I appreciate the candor.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), who heads the Congressional Progressive Caucus, also favors Walz. She talked of Walz’s record of backing labor unions and working families.

“I want somebody who’s really strongly pro-labor and understands labor, because this is a big part of the working-class agenda and making sure that we win working-class votes,” Jayapal said.

“I want somebody who is totally committed to the agenda that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris fought for, … and then I think it should be somebody who’s really good in some of our mid-Western states. So making sure that we win Wisconsin, Ohio — some of those places. And so that kind of brings me to — I really like Gov. Walz,” she said. “I like the things that he’s been able to do. I like that he’s from a rural town; I like that he’s got a military background.”

“So he would be a great choice,” she added.

Support for Walz didn’t end there.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is believed to be favoring Walz, too. A source told The Hill “she is always especially fond of former House colleagues,” giving a possible nod to Walz.”
