President Biden Invokes Defense Production Act to Accelerate Domestic Manufacturing of Clean Energy
DPA Invocation Will Boost American Production of the Critical Technologies Necessary to Lower Energy Costs, Support the Clean Energy Economy, and Strengthen National Security.
WASHINGTON, D.C.— President Biden today issued presidential determinations providing the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with the authority to utilize the Defense Production Act (DPA) to accelerate domestic production of five key energy technologies: (1) solar; (2) transformers and electric grid components; (3) heat pumps; (4) insulation; and (5) electrolyzers, fuel cells, and platinum group metals. The DPA determinations are part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s plan to lower energy costs for families, strengthen national security, and achieve lasting American energy independence that reduces demand for fossil fuels and bolsters our clean energy economy.

“President Biden has invoked the Defense Production Act so that the U.S. can take ownership of its clean energy independence,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “For too long the nation’s clean energy supply chain has been over-reliant on foreign sources and adversarial nations. With the new DPA authority, DOE can help strengthen domestic solar, heat pump and grid manufacturing industries while fortifying America’s economic security and creating good-paying jobs, and lowering utility costs along the way.”

“Reducing America’s dependence on gas and oil is critical to U.S. national security,” said Deputy Secretary of Defense Dr. Kathleen Hicks. “In conflict, fossil fuel supply lines are especially vulnerable. The actions President Biden announced today will help strengthen our supply chains and ensure that the United States is a leader in producing the energy technologies that are essential to our future success. They will also help accelerate DoD’s transition toward clean energy technologies that can help strengthen military capability while creating good jobs for American workers.”

So the US Supreme Court has now overturned Roe v Wade.

Please always remember that, while Republicans are fascists who hate women and all kinds of religious, ethnic and other minorities, are homophobic, transphobic monsters, the Dems haven't been doing much to defend women's reproductive rights recently. They certainly have not been passing any federal legislation to that effect. In fact, Nancy Pelosi campaigned on behalf of Cuellar, an anti-choice incumbent (who won by just 289 votes, can you imagine what the outcome would have been if Pelosi had backed his opponent?) as she now prepares to be outraged about this political development. Actions speak louder than words, always.

I'd also advise anyone to not listen to those who will defend the Dem's inaction in 2009 when they had a supermajority that would have made it possible to enshrine abortion rights into federal law at a time where the US Supreme Court was not such a far-right nightmare. We know the Republicans are awful, that does not mean people should not have expectations for the other political party, especially if they pretend to care about these issues. Actions speak louder than words, always.

Primary all these losers and vote all of these conservative corpratists out of office and elect Dems who actually demonstrate that this issue means something to them other than an opportunity to fundraise. Actions speak louder than words, always.

There were more anti-choice Democratic Senators during Obama's terms in office so it would have been filibustered.

All rights (based on Roe and others) are on the chopping block now. The Republicans are out to remove everything before the 1790s and earlier.

Republican Justices lied under oath to the Senate in their confirmation hearings.

‘Guns have more rights than women’ -Republican court in the past couple of days

Hope Sarandon and others that helped build this are happy along with the other all-powerful DNC conspiracy theorists (the DNC is a weak organization that can barely find its way out of a paper bag.) The far left are like those creepy men that only want to date virgins.

Either Clinton would have appointed those 3 (or less) Justices or the 3 seats would have been empty allowing for a deadlocked court (3-3) or a 4-3 court if Kennedy stuck around as a swing vote.

Thomas (R)
Alito (R)
Roberts (R)
Breyer (D)
Sotomayor (D)
Kagan (D)

Scalia (R) -> Gorsuch (R)
Kennedy (R) -> Kavanaugh (R)
Ginsburg (D) -> Barrett (R)

If Ginsburg retired/died and Kennedy stuck during Hillary Clinton's presidency the court would be (4-4) with Kennedy as a swing vote.

2016 mattered. A lot. We were warned.

There were 57 Dems in the Senate and they also had a House majority during Obama's first 2 years in office if I remember right and there were 2 independents in the Senate who would have voted for enshrining abortion rights into legislation so only 1 Republican might have been needed and that might have been possible to get at the time. Fact is, Obama decided it was no longer worth making abortion rights a priority at the time so we'll never know but we do know that he gave up on making it a big issue (just like he gave up on a number of other big issues he campaigned on). Remember that when corporate clowns like him try to give you advice going forward or lecture you when you have actual expectations.

But yeah, Pelosi has consistently been carrying water for anti-choice Dems (remember Daniel Lipinski?). Vote all these clowns out because, fundamentally, these clowns are useless and don't believe the Republicans are who they say they are and then act surprised that the Republicans do what they said they would do. Charlie Browns missing the football every time... The only things Biden, Schumer and Pelosi are good at is political malpractice.

House passes first major federal gun safety legislation in decades, bill will next go to Biden for signature - CNNPolitics
The measure includes millions of dollars for mental health, school safety, crisis intervention programs and incentives for states to include juvenile records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

It also makes significant changes to the process when someone ages 18 to 21 goes to buy a firearm and closes the so-called boyfriend loophole, a victory for Democrats, who have long fought for that.
It's barely anything and targets young people in particular (because politicians are a bunch of olds so young people make easier scapegoats for all gun violence.)

The Independent - New poll suggests midterm voter backlash against Republicans over Roe v Wade ruling
In a CBS News poll released on Sunday, half of Democratic respondents said that Friday’s ruling ending federal abortion protections for every woman in the country made them more likely to participate in the upcoming midterm elections; by comparison, the percentage of Republicans who said the same was 30 points lower.

Those results may indicate a significant voter enthusiasm gap between Democratic and Republican-leaning voters that could hamstring the GOP’s efforts to win back majorities in the House and Senate, and thereby prevent Joe Biden from passing any significant legislation supported by his party’s base for at least two years.

And Democrats weren’t the only ones in the poll more energised to vote. Independent voters who said they were more likely to participate in the upcoming midterms as a result of the Roe decision outnumbered Republicans (28 per cent to 20 per cent). And a clear majority of independents oppose GOP efforts, currently being launched in states around the country, to restrict or totally ban abortion.
CBS News poll: Americans react to overturning of Roe v. Wade — most disapprove, call it step backward - CBS News
The American public is rendering its initial judgment on the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and most disapprove of the ruling, including two-thirds of women who disapprove.
By more than a 20-point margin, Americans call it a step backward rather than forward for America. And women, by more than three to one, think the ruling will make women's lives worse rather than better.
Still an uphill battle with historical trends against the party in power every midterm.

Majority Opposes Overturning Roe v. Wade... More than Six in Ten Say Decision Will Push Them to the Polls in November
In a majority decision, the United States Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade which, for nearly fifty years, guaranteed access to abortion in the United States. However, majorities of Americans oppose the Court’s ruling and have concerns that the decision will have broader constitutional implications. Following the decision, President Joe Biden asserted that Roe will be on the ballot in November. 61% of Americans agree, saying the Court’s decision will make them more likely to vote in this year’s midterm elections, and, by a double-digit margin (15 points), they think the decision will motivate them to vote for a congressional candidate who will support federal legislation that will restore the protections of Roe v. Wade.

The Democrats need to win the popular vote for the House by >2 points just to split the House 50/50 (They won the popular vote by 3 points in 2020 which gave them 51% of the seats. They won the popular vote for the House in 2012 by 1 point but failed to capture a majority of seats. There's a Republican bias in the distribution of seats [gerrymandering + state lines] just like the electoral college.)

Kamala Harris out there saying the Dems won't push for an exception to the filibuster on abortion rights, even though when they raised the debt ceiling in December 2021, Dems and Republicans agreed to a measure raising the debt ceiling with just 51 votes instead of the 60 that are needed if a bill is filibustered, mainly because otherwise their stock portfolios would have crashed and they would have lost a lot of money. When they felt they could personally be affected, they were so quick to make exceptions to the filibuster there wasn't even an extended public debate about it.

They have no strategy to do anything on abortion rights because I suspect they don't plan on doing anything on it legislatively because they got the perfect excuse not to try, namely the 50:50 split in the Senate. They're going to use the issue to fundraise and not do much else and they have not given us any reason to think otherwise.

No, Harris said the votes don’t exist to change the filibuster now (because of Manchin and Sinema) and Manchin is anti-abortion so he’d vote against an abortion rights bill even if the filibuster didn’t exist. When Schumer recently brought up the women’s protection act, Manchin joined with the Rs in filibustering it.

'Right now, given the current composition of the Senate, the votes aren't there (for filibuster reform),' Harris said.

'I understand why you're asking that question,' she continued. 'But the reality of it is, we don't even get to really answer that in terms of whether it happens or not, if we don't have the numbers in the Senate.'

'And again, that's why I keep coming back to the importance of an election that is only 130-odd days away.'

The Democrats have moved to protect choice in the states where they have the votes and there’s no legislative filibuster.
