There was never a dispute of his guilt. His lawyer's pleaded "not guilty due to insanity", so it was up to the jury to decide whether that was a valid defense or not. By ruling him guilty, they've concluded he's not insane under the court's legal definition. Whether he's "actually" insane is something else entirely, but I'd argue that anyone who does something like he did meets the Webster's definition, although for obvious reasons that can't be the court's definition.

So if insanity is just the legal way of saying psychosis or bad impulse control why isn't that decision left for the trained professionals?

Because then every single person who commits a horrible crime like this would be declared insane and no one would face the consequences for their crimes.

Shooter Opens Fire in Louisiana Screening of Trainwreck, Two Are Dead
Two people have reportedly died and at least six are injured after a gunman opened fire at a screening of Trainwreck in the Grand 16 Theater in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Twenty minutes into the film, an “older white male” stood up in the theater and began shooting into the audience, according to early reports.

“We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker,” one witness told The Daily Advertiser.

Lafayette law enforcement officials have confirmed to TIME that they are on the scene after receiving reports of the shooting.

Law enforcement officials said that the shooter is believed to have committed suicide.

What will it take for America to finally understand that gun laws must be prohibited? This is becoming completely insane

That's not going to be the solution either. Just like with other things that are banned/illegal, people will always be able to get there hands on them. And unfortunately that will include people who have no use having them.

I'd wager that most of the guns used in shootings are unregistered/illegal anyways, so doing away with them won't solve anything.

I just can't believe this happened again.
