Tom Cruise & Jerry Bruckheimer Talking ‘Top Gun 2’
Jerry Bruckheimer went on Twitter to tout a meeting with his Top Gun star Tom Cruise about the long-in-the-works sequel to the iconic 1986 action movie directed by Tony Scott. Bruckheimer flew down to New Orleans to meet with Cruise and talk about a possible plot line, we’re told. Cruise is in Louisiana right now filming Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

The pair have said for years they have wanted to do a sequel and have been dancing around the idea for about three decades. A source with knowledge of the goings-on said today that “it’s closer now to becoming real than it’s been in 30 years.” In 2013, Bruckheimer said that Scott’s suicide put a damper on moving forward, but that the studio (Paramount) was still high on the possibility.

Top Gun, of course, helped launch Cruise into the Hollywood stratosphere and further established Bruckheimer and his then-producing partner (the late) Don Simpson as moviedom’s biggest tentpole producers of their time.

David Ellison was talking up a sequel on the junket tours last year for Skydance’s Terminator: Genisys, and in November Cruise’s co-star Val Kilmer said he was offered a role.

Cruise likes to work with people he's worked with before, at a guess.
I like Kosinski's films, so I'm on board, even though I'm not sure his filmography resembles the tone and style of the first film at all...

Peter Berg would be perfect for this sort of movie.

Kosinski is a great choice. I'm a big fan of his visuals and his choice of music scores. He got Daft Punk and M83 to do some great work for both films.

“We’re gonna have the same tone that we had with the first one. Stylistically it’s gonna be the same. We’re gonna have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer. Aviators are back. The need for speed, we’re gonna have big machines. It’s gonna be a competition film like the first one, and it’s gonna be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one but a progression for Maverick.
It’s not gonna be called Top Gun 2 it’s gonna be Top Gun: Maverick. I didn’t want a number. You don’t need a number.
