The Prestige is Christopher Nolan's best film. It amazes me how I can watch one scene from it and still get so much from it. I really need to watch it again and analyze it more.
It's absolutely my favorite. Here's an unnecessarily lengthy post explaining why I have a hard time saying it would be his best:
If you wanna observe near perfection - watch Kubrick post 2001, or David Lean'sLawrence of Arabia, Kurosawa'sSeven Samurai. The Prestige is nowhere near that level. Sure, the structure is impecable and it's near and dear to most of us round here, but there are far better cinematic achievements out there, from decades ago as well. Be realistic.
The closest Nolan got to 'perfection' the way I see it is with The Dark Knight... it needs to break new ground and create something unique as well, I don't feel like Prestige did that...
Second movie from recent memory that I'd call 'perfect' - Mad Max: Fury Road.
