chiming in to say Small Axe is the best overall project by a filmmaker this year to make Keith happy
Red, White and Blue is terrific, but it’s the first of the three Small Axe films so far I felt was limited by the micro-budget and short running time of the production. There’s a 2 plus hour epic version of this film that gives more time for the characters and conflicts to develop and come to a boil. It’s almost as though it was a lesson in narrative economy to shave a 2.5 hour long movie into the absolute bare essentials. It doesn’t land as hard as it could have, but this remains excellent cinema. Boyega is amazing.
