Don’t Dress For ‘Joker’ Sequel Yet; Insiders Say Todd Phillips Never Pitched Origin Film Series On Other DC Characters
The Joker sequel news that hit a trade today is great click bait, but multiple inside sources said that while a sequel to the billion dollar grossing film is an obvious likely eventuality that makes all the financial sense in the world, at this point there are no deals for a sequel, nor even any negotiations with director Todd Phillips or his co-writer Scott Silver.

Those sources add that the linchpin of today’s THR story — that a week after Joker‘s opening, Phillips met with Warner Bros film chief Toby Emmerich to pitch a portfolio of DC character origin stories — is as flat false as earlier stories that Martin Scorsese contemplated directing the first Joker (Scorsese was originally going to be a producer, but dropped out because of his crowded schedule). Multiple sources said no such October 7 meeting between Phillips and Emmerich occurred, and that Phillips hasn’t even considered overseeing other DC character films. That would be in keeping with Phillips’s track record of being selective: after The Hangover began breaking records for R rated films, he did not seek to turn his company into a comedy factory.

No one is saying a Joker sequel won’t happen someday. But multiple sources said nothing has happened yet, and that Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver have made no moves to draft the further dark rise of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck character.

Uggg…I hope this doesn't happen. What kind of story would this even be? An origin of Joker is fine, but who wants to see a fully-established Joker committing crimes and whatnot without a Batman to oppose him?

I was talking to a coworker on how a supposed sequel could work and an interesting idea popped up: Another origin movie with the same cast, but an entirely different situation. A Jokerverse of different origins with Joaquin as different Jokers would be kinda nuts.

Never happening though

My idea would be to introduce Harvey Dent and show how the Joker turns Dent into a villain, therefore both a sequel to the Joker and an origin story of Dent. Anyway, hard to imagine a sequel as much centered on Arthur, sequel always expand the scope, and amongst Gotham's villains, Dent is one of the most interesting.

Joker was surprisingly good, but I don't need a continuation. Not because it would "tarnish the original", because I don't believe in such bullshit (let studios do as many sequels, prequels and remakes to good movies as they want, since it doesn't change the original in anyway). I just don't care what happens to Arthur after the credits roll.

The idea of similar stories with other characters is interesting, but not from Phillips, who has already proven that he likes to directly copy himself (and Scorsese). And what would he do now? Matt Damon as Two-Face in a crime drama set in Boston-like Gotham, a'la The Departed? Penguin as Casino with Joe Pesci's cameo? :P

To be honest, a Man-Bat film made as a body horror in the style of David Cronenberg would be pretty cool, though derivative like Joker, if it also visually referred to the original.

I think that this idea of remaking old classics into villain stories can get boring much faster than standard superhero movies because it will quickly feel like an unfunny joke, if the "references" are made as obvious as in Joker.

In general, Joker would have been a better movie if it were at least visually distinct from Taxi Driver and more similar to the traditional iconography of Gotham and Batman's mythos.
