Leonardo DiCaprio is in negotiations to star in Fox Searchlight’s remake of “Nightmare Alley,” Guillermo del Toro’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning film “The Shape of Water.”

Del Toro will direct the pic and co-wrote the script with Kim Morgan. The pic is being produced and financed by Guillermo Del Toro and J. Miles Dale with TSG Entertainment, with Fox Searchlight acquiring worldwide distribution rights to the film.

The film is based on the 1947 Fox movie that starred Tyrone Power as an ambitious young con-man who hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. At first, they enjoy success fleecing people with their mentalist act, but then she turns the table on him, out-manipulating the manipulator.

The plan is for the film to shoot in the fall as del Toro fills out the remaining roles.

Leo, according to sources, had been mulling GDT's NIGHTMARE ALLEY and new scripts from Paul Thomas Anderson and Alejandro Gonzalez Inaritu. Now looks like he's finally made his choice...

Maybe those films conflict with Flower Moon shooting dates. Or maybe the role isn't much. Working with O. Russell sounded like a no brainer after AH, but that Edgar Ramirez character in Joy was pointless. There has to be a good reason, because PTA is definitely on DiCaprio's director shortlist.

Bradley Cooper Circling Guillermo del Toro’s Next Film, ‘Nightmare Alley
Bradley Cooper is in early talks to star in Guillermo del Toro and Fox Searchlight’s adaptation of “Nightmare Alley.”

Sources say Cooper recently received an offer and while it’s currently unclear if a deal will close, sources indicate both sides have engaged in talks. Cooper would take the place of Leonardo DiCaprio, who ended up passing on the project after a deal could not be reached.

Del Toro will direct the pic and co-wrote the script with Kim Morgan.

What does that mean "a deal could not be reached"?

Leo demanded more 25 year old girlfriends than the studio wanted to give, I suppose
