2018-2019 Awards Season
https://variety.com/2019/film/awards/ac ... 203136380/Variety has confirmed that four Oscars will be presented during commercial breaks of the 91st Academy Awards.
The awards will be best cinematography, film editing, live action short and makeup and hairstyling. The winning speeches will edited to remove the winners’ walk from their seats to the stage and each speech will be aired separately later in the telecast.
Editing and cinematography? Fucking seriously?
And all four categories are without any Disney movie in its nominees. Coincidence?
I finally saw all the Best Picture nominees. A Star is Born is hands down the best of the bunch. Then there are two really good films in Roma and BlacKkKlansman. And the rest are decent and they're all really in the same boat with a lot of issues.
I still maintain that the Best Actor category has been most appropriately nominated. Bale, Cooper and Malek are all great. It looks like Cooper is out of the race now, though and it's between only Bale and Malek with the latter gaining more momentum with his SAG and BAFTA wins.

A sad day when the Academy values animated short and fucking documentary short over the two categories that literally defines the medium of film more than anything else. It's both hillarious and disgraceful at the same time.Pratham wrote: ↑February 12th, 2019, 5:46 amhttps://variety.com/2019/film/awards/ac ... 203136380/Variety has confirmed that four Oscars will be presented during commercial breaks of the 91st Academy Awards.

Yeah fuck the short films, always taking away attention from the proper feature films. They already get way too much exposure.Sanchez wrote: ↑February 12th, 2019, 7:14 amA sad day when the Academy values animated short and fucking documentary short over the two categories that literally defines the medium of film more than anything else. Yeah, it's ridiculous that cinematography and editing is are put into that position.Pratham wrote: ↑February 12th, 2019, 5:46 amhttps://variety.com/2019/film/awards/ac ... 203136380/Variety has confirmed that four Oscars will be presented during commercial breaks of the 91st Academy Awards.

I'll be very interested to see how many people will watch it on ABC. I think it is very likely that the numbers will be very good. General audience can't name DP or editor, let's face it. There is a reason why on Fallon or Kimmel you almost never see directors and the few directors you see are Cameron, Scorsese... But then the question is: do you want the best audience and then play it like the globes, or do you want to honor cinema as an art?
With that attitude we should have 100 categories spread across 4 or 5 Oscar nights so everyone and their grandma who has had anything to do with moving images on screen can get some exposure and recognition.ArmandFancypants wrote: ↑February 12th, 2019, 7:19 amYeah fuck the short films, always taking away attention from the proper feature films. That best popular film category sounds good all of the sudden, if the Oscars should be more about being diverse and pleasing everybody and less about awarding quality, art and craftsmanship.
I think short films also deserve recognition honestly. It does take a lot of talent and craft to be able to tell an effective story in under an hour. Short films are also a great way to experiment with different techniques in filmmaking and storytelling that can then influence feature length films.
I do agree that cutting out editing and cinematography is really terrible. I also think taking away hairstyling and makeup is a bad idea too since hairstyling and makeup in films can set trends in mainstream beauty and have also helped create iconic looks for many characters. And then there's the special effects makeup too that takes hundreds of hours of artistry and dedication.

This is because inherently there is no quality, art or craftsmanship in short films of course.Sanchez wrote: ↑February 12th, 2019, 10:59 amWith that attitude we should have 100 categories spread across 4 or 5 Oscar nights so everyone and their grandma who has had anything to do with moving images on screen can get some exposure and recognition.ArmandFancypants wrote: ↑February 12th, 2019, 7:19 amYeah fuck the short films, always taking away attention from the proper feature films.
