I hate that it has to be "one or the other". I liked both Interstellar and Martian. They are quite different films besides involving space and Matt Damon.

The Martian is perfectly benign middlebrow entertainment. Interstellar is in a league of its own.

But that's basically one of the reasons it was popular for a bit to argue it was better than Interstellar. I remember hearing embarrassing excuses on par with "it actually has character development"

I'm one of those people who likes The Martian better than Interstellar. I like Gravity better than both, though. I'm sure I won't be in the minority at all around here with that opinion...
