but she committed to doing all those things with great comedic skill...rather than play them simply...and then she had a truthful emotional moment, so moving you couldnt help but feel for her

to combine comedy and tragedy in such a way is the mark of a talented actor

He was very good. So chilling.

It may be sick, but he played Martin with such charisma that you don't dislike him until the very end. Even during his monologue you think maybe, just maybe, he's going turn it around. Very convincing. He described his goal of making Martin likable and charismatic in the the special features (which are extensive and amazing)

totally agree with this. I'll have to check out the special features, Fincher blu ray features are some of my favorites.

The special features are amazing. Extensive and entertaining. I have never been more impressed than with this film's special features. Every movie should aim to deliver like this.

its pretty simple...you dont play the notion of a serial killer...its already conveyed by the words, and the plot...you play what you want to layer on top of it. So Stellan simply played a charming and a gracious host. He never played anything dark or evil. That's what Heath did with the joker...that's what Waltz did with Landa. Don't do the job that is already done for you by the screen writer. Your job is to come in, and use your artistry and invent the how of what the character does in the scenes .
