Plus, there are lots of Joker stories where the Joker is not really sophisticated in what he's trying to do
yeah and those aren't the good ones

I didn’t hate it. But I didn’t like it either.
Beautiful imagery, set design, amazing score, costume design was on point, and the overall aesthetics were great. But the core of the film felt hollow. It was trying to say something but it never really said it. It’s a shell of a film. All the right pieces are there but there is no thematic depth.
If someone with more substance had written the script, it would have been fantastic.
This feels like a missed opportunity to make a truly great film.

just watch hustlers again if you really want a scorsese inspired movie that is set in new york and has a "fuck the rich" message.

Yeah I can totally see what you mean. It just didn't work for me. I think if the script had a few more edits it could have been a very impactful movie.

i did a twitter thread for the interested:
https://twitter.com/metaplexmovies/stat ... 860356609
i also located a review from the great David Sims (co-host of the v popular blank check podcast) that echoes my thoughts down to a science, although i only discovered it a bit ago:
https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainme ... ix/599215/
i wish i connected to joker as a movie about the incalculable triggers of violence in our world but instead i sat mostly bored. i wasn't pressed, provoked, or incited. just... bored. just to be clear: i don't think the movie is "saying" anything "dangerous," it's more that it doesn't have
anything to say. it's vacant. which 1.) makes it uninteresting anyway but 2.) lets the undesirables of the world read the movie however they want.
PS, there's *plenty* of movies that share this structure and manage to pack serious thematic resonance, from the obvious scorsese movies to the player (yes the player) to nightcrawler, all of which are masterpieces. even gone girl.
&& lmao artemis.
