i’m now wondering if a few people just knew about spoilers and ended up developing fan theories around them, because the thought of people reaching that conclusion organically just seems like a fucking stretch
people listing “clues” of cal being dr manhattan are like... shut up lol. “dressed in blue”, “the death/heaven talk with kids”, “laurie complimenting him as hot” uuuuugh

i never looked at that theory as anything more than a meme which is why the reveal and this insanely elaborate interconnectedness of angela with almost everyone important came across as slightly cringey to me. but it’s likely just my fault. but i’m also wondering if i could have ever came to those conclusions myself if the internet hadn’t ruined them for me and i truly didn’t see them coming

I didn't find it weird because the show itself cheekishly threw that in at the outset, and ofc the race theme and Lindelof being Lindelof so it was on my list of possibilities definitely.

The thing is though that Cal is only a conduit/phone booth to John or a mere vessel or both, as in, he's not Jon more than the servants in Ozymandiaworld are people, so the theories are still only half right anyway.

that is something i’m thinking about right now (finished the episode not even an hour ago). Jon is literally white and there’s not much left for the imagination (like with hooded justice), so I’m wondering if they’ll keep using cal as a vessel or actually show Jon...himself? or like. cal in some flashbacks when jon had already taken up his form, and then actual jon in other scenes. cuz ugh idk. i don’t know if i’m going deaf but in the promo for the next ep, angela is talking to dr/cal/whatever but his voice is vaguely like cal’s but also.. not really?

My main problem is that there were some VERY VAGUE clues, but... this sort of reveal doesn't come off as satisfying for the reason that it just feels so random. The same thing goes for the Kavalry turning out to be this group of people who are technologically capable of capturing Dr Manhattan. All this wasn't set up in any way, so it just feels random. I'm looking forward to the conclusion, but I wouldn't say I was shocked in a good way.

not all reveals need to be heavily foreshadowed. what i think is sorta brilliant about this is it makes a *lot* of sense in retrospect, though.

kind of like Watchmen's big reveal
this new series is largely about multifaceted appropriation going in multiple directions, so the fact Dr. Manhattan appropriated the appearance of a black man, while the 7th Cavalry wish to appropriate Dr. Manhattan's godly status and skin tone, makes this thematically cohesive in a way i feel is great

Yes, I was thinking that maybe my definition of a good reveal is different, I have to think about that. Still, at the moment I didn't feel any satisfaction - maybe because it served as the cliffhanger for the episode, so there was no room for exploring the implications of the reveal. We'll have to see next week :D

Yeah, well don't jump on me, please, I didn't want to universally say that only one type of reveal works, sorry if it came off like that. And that's a whole other story of why and how reveals and foreshadowing and etc works on TV, in literature, on film, which is interesting on its own... but for now, I merely wanted to express that I kind of think that this whole thing could be interesting, but they way it was handled wasn't really exciting for me. :D

maybe it'll work better for you in retrospect when you see the next 2 episodes. leftovers often operated that way. I also wonder if binging it magnified this effect you're feeling right now.

loved this though.

oh ALSO what I love about this:
Damon said his Watchmen is the "New Testament" to the "Old Testament "of the original comic. Well, in the New Testament of Watchmen, man has been made flesh. Religious Sisters are also "Married to God."

Now we'll see if he has to sacrifice himself to save us from our sins.
