This. I imagine this decision has way more to do with a potential lawsuit than what Chris and Denis have been saying.

The Batman is coming in 2022 and everywhere I've read says The Suicide Squad will release simultaneously on HBO Max next year.

Opening internationally two weeks before - guess they must have worked out something with Denis and Legendary to keep the HBO Max release in the US

Isn't the work around here for Villenueve to push the film into 2022? Clearly WB don't have faith in 2021 and Villeneuve is pushing for theatrical. If Dune sticks to a September/October roll out, it'll likely not be able to sustain the competition. Especially since the target audience of this film are likely adept at pirating films.

Though perhaps WB are of (the not unreasonable opinion) that Dune would underperform even in a a healthy theatrical marketplace. I think Dune may have struggled to hit $500m internationally.
